The School of Engineering in the Catholic University of America offers on-site graduate programs for the employees of the Fort Belvoir Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD), as well as the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWC-CD), leading to the Master of Science in Engineering. The students can take a variety of courses in Electrical Engineering and Computer science, Mechanical Engineering as well as Engineering Management.

The goal of these degree programs is to provide students with both theoretical underpinnings and in-depth, real-world practitioner expertise in signal/image Processing, Acoustics, Antennas, Electromagnetic Propagation, Vibrations, Controls, and Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Engineering Management courses, and core technical courses that support the accompanying research areas; the curricula could lead to a Ph.D in engineering.  All courses will be conducted on-site at Fort Belvoir, VA, and Carderock, MD. 

Two options are available. The non-thesis option requires a minimum of 30 semester credit hours (SCH) of approved course work. The thesis option requires a minimum of 24 SCH of approved course work plus a thesis comprising six SCH of research guidance. For MSEE, the approved course work must include at least 18 SCH of approved electrical engineering courses. For MSME, the approved course work must include at least 15 SCH of approved mechanical engineering courses. In either case, the remaining courses must be in engineering and science disciplines and approved by the graduate coordinators in the respective departments.
 
The doctoral program requires a master’s degree in an appropriate field at an accredited institution and successful completion of a minimum of 24 SCH above the master’s degree, if the master degree is received from CUA; otherwise, completion of a minimum of 30 SCH is required. The courses are selected in consultation with an advisor; a written comprehensive examination; completion of an approved dissertation in a selected area; and passing of an oral examination of the dissertation. Doctoral programs are arranged in close supervision of a major advisor and consultation of a dissertation committee. The dissertation committee consists of three professors including the major advisor.
