Learning Objectives Upon completion of BE 497, students should have
been exposed to the complete design process of devices with medical or
rehabilitation applications.
Specifically:
- Identify the need for a device which will solve a well defined problem
- Identify regulatory standards (e.g. FDA) which ensure human safety, and
how these affect the design process
- Understand and appreciate product
liability and safety
- Better understand idea generation techniques
- Learn new concepts in hardware and software design
- Understand idea protection methods (patents, copyrights, etc)
- Understand teamwork and the organizational process of design
projects
- Better understand web-based searches for
collaborators, patents, copyrights, and similar ideas
- Learn about the economics involved in
design processes and how this affects the success of the product
- Understand the various roles of
engineering organizations in the setting of ethical and design standards
Performance Objectives Upon completion of BE 497 students should be
able to:
- Carry out the design process from concept to deliverable
- Be proficient in writing and presenting design results
- Understand what information is necessary for the design and where to locate it
- Utilize software packages for development of web pages, progress
reporting, and process documentation
Experiences Upon completion of BE 497, students should have completed
the following experiences:
- Designed a device with medical or rehabilitative objectives from concept
to finished product
- Created a web page outlining the project's objectives, goals, progress,
and results
- Written an initial and then final project report of professional quality
- Presented the final design results to a group of faculty and peers
Assessment
- Written project reports
- Presentations
- Project web page
- Design notebooks
- Progress reports
