Research or Experimental Component
Participants will work as members of a small team on several challenging projects. These projects are designed to incorporate aspects of the classical fields of engineering and computer science, and use some of the same tools as college engineering courses. We are still finalizing the program details for 2006, but in 2005 participants:
- Designed, constructed and programmed a robot capable of autonomously playing a modified game of ping-pong against other teams' robots.
- Designed and programmed a robotic arm to grasp and lift a variety of objects
- Designed and constructed a bridge spanning one meter, which was then evaluated on measures of efficiency, aesthetics, and strength.
Eye on Engineering and Computer Science is designed to be creative, hands-on, and very representative of both how engineers are educated and how professional engineers work. Teams are small and collaborative. Objectives are clearly defined but have many different solutions. Projects include planning, building, and testing phases, and are overseen by School of Engineering faculty and current students. Time is a factor, and there is a competitive element.
